Today's poem is by Ruth Thompson
Reversing the Spell
Always the fish
Up here on the mountain
Pale blue butterfly
No silver slipperies,
Only, in the ochre dust,
easy climb
the necessity of an axe.
with gratitude to Eleanor Wilner for the title
with their tricky wishes.
Throw them back, throw them back!
And the gold ring with them!
there's nothing to wish for
so high, so clear,
the light so near.
on a sticky orange monkeyflower.
Two scrawny bees
plowing pollen.
nothing you dreamed of
sliding through your fingers
like herring.
a round red seed.
But don't plant it!
You know what that leads to
fool's gold
oven door
bloody harp
