Today's poem is by Wayne Dodd
Anecdote of the Turkeys
It is dark of course and the turkeys,
roosting on the fence, in the rainstorm
(under the bois d'arc trees, in the rainstorm),
have thrown, stupid birds, their small heads back
(their invisible dark heads in the rain
back, their beaks gaping wide, in the downpour,
wide, in the suffocating downpour,
while the farmer (with his wife, in their warm bed,
with his warm sleeping wife, in the pre-dawn)
listens, and calculates his choices.
