Today's poem is "Carol for the Birds"
from A Report from the Border
Anne Stevenson,
poet, critic and biographer, grew up in post World War II United States and came to England in the 1950s. Daughter of the American philosopher C.L. Stevenson, trained as a musician at the University of Michigan, Stevenson brought out her first book of poems in 1965. She is the author of 15 other books of poetry.
About A Report from the Border:
"Anne Stevenson is at her most original when she explores states of consciousness...which involve the perplexing ways that mind and body interact. Inventive and demanding,
she is never abstruse, as she tests out philosophical abstractions on her herself in daily situations"
"One of the most intelligent, assured, vivid and skilful poets writing today"
John Taylor, Poetry (Chicago)
Gerard Woodward, Times Literary Suppliment
