Samantha Deal was born and raised in Western North Carolina. She holds an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a PhD from Western Michigan University. She was the recipient of residencies from the Ludington Writers' Group and was awarded the 2016 nonfiction prize from Writers@Work. Her poetry and nonfiction have appeared in Best New Poets 2017, Quarterly West, Hunger Mountain, The Journal, The Boiler, Tupelo Quarterly, Ninth Letter Online, Mississippi Review, and other journals. Currently, she teaches at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.
