Dinner with God

A hungry Christian sat down across from God
as one might sit with a friend. God stiffened at first,
but then, relaxing, He stroked His beard and smiled.
"Yes, stay where you are," God said, "and I will tell you
what's on your mind tonight. " "If You can do that,"
the man replied, "please order my dinner for me."

As soon as he spoke these words, a waiter appeared.
God scanned His board of chalked-up specials, then said,
"Waiter, just bring him a small plate of respite.
Though what this fellow would really like," God added,
"is a super king-size serving of absolution.
That isn't featured on My menu today.

"And what I would like for myself," He went on, "is patience.
God knows"—He chuckled at His choice of words—"I need it."
