Today's poem is by Gary Glauber
Graveyard Shift
The vagrant tree sprite
meets the head misfit
far along aisle five,
next to a pyramid of cereal boxes
neatly stacked, cartoon eyes
all following the action carefully.
A compromise is made
before the checkout begins.
Righteousness counts as
one item here, and the scanner
rings up some organic
benevolent flair.
This is your ritual,
your misplaced metaphor,
the wreckage of your urbane
constellation, gone sadly awry
in an uncharted midnight sky,
searching for meaning
in this 24/7 universe.
