Today's poem is by Timons Esaias
All The Important People #1
I almost took it up today,
this book, this great and noble book,
(that I won't name, but imagine
War and Peace or A Research Report
on Misplaced Time) yes, I
almost took it up, but lay
instead, idle, upon the porch
wondering why intelligence partakes
too little of wisdom; and if self-delusion
is a waste of tithe and life, is money
the only real substitute?
All the important people have crossed the St. Bernard
and gone down to Florence
for the Campanile, have read this famous book,
and know the author's dates.
All the important people
are living the lives I meant to have,
but can't quite muster.
