The Excommunicated: Sea Anemones

Animals disguised:
They occur at extremes—
Tidal spout, silent pool,

Sand no root can hold.
Heroic, they persist in
A lovely singularity

Of basal disc, neurotoxin.
Anemones' mouths are
Anemones' anuses,

But they seem blooming
Teal-green and muscular
With petal-tentacles

And the insouciance
Of the redeemed, at least
Until the tide recedes

And a delicate periwinkle
Ripples like penitence
Under the still waters
