The Excommunicated: Sea Anemones
Animals disguised:
They occur at extremes
Tidal spout, silent pool,Sand no root can hold.
Heroic, they persist in
A lovely singularityOf basal disc, neurotoxin.
Anemones' mouths are
Anemones' anuses,But they seem blooming
Teal-green and muscular
With petal-tentaclesAnd the insouciance
Of the redeemed, at least
Until the tide recedesAnd a delicate periwinkle
Ripples like penitence
Under the still waters
