Obituary
Third week of March and sugaring is nearly finished.
Two men in orange snowmobile suits fish on thinning ice.
The water in the hole is dark as sap, and the others
dragged their huts from the lake weeks ago.
Easter comes early this spring, and at the bar
on Good Friday one of the men is asked if he thinks
he can walk on water. The perch are still biting,
and the other, who knows he can't walk on water,
let alone swim, swears the blue hasn't left the ice,
raises his glass and proclaims that more than faith
will keep them afloat.
