Prelude
I wake to find a grey day waiting.
Fog has bulldozed our long
suburban avenue to a blurred
cul-de-sac. Where's the bored humof cars in the early rat-run,
brattling magpie or sweet air
of some smaller, unknown bird?
Stillness, a world on mute.Then it comes, that deep, brassy note
shivering the inner ear,
as it might be the first of a whole
orchestra at sea, tuning up.So this is what we were waiting for:
