Robert Creeley
's distinguished career in poetry includes the publication of more than sixty volumes of poetry, numerous collaborations with artists and writers of note, and correspondences with William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound, and Charles Olson. After having received his BA at Black Mountain College, Creeley served on its faculty and edited Black Mountain Review. He later received his MA from the University of New Mexico and briefly taught there. He was for many years the Samuel P Caper Professor of poetry and humanities at the State University of New York, Buffalo, and he joined the faculty of Brown University in 2003. His honors include the Lannan Lifetime Achievement Award, the Frost Medal, the Shelley Memorial Award, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a Rockefeller Foundation grant, fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, and election to the post of Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 1999. He died on March 30, 2005, at the age of 78. The poems included in this issue also appear in On Earth: Last Poems and an Essay (April 2006 University of California Press).
