Making Lemonade

I like to think that you knew,
when you stenciled the aphorism
onto your boat, laughing, that those
who wield it have to remember:
you need more than lemons
to make lemonade.

Even the staunchest puritan
isn't going to drink straight lemon juice
unredeemed by a touch of sweetness
and the fluid embrace of water.
